I've suffered from cystic acne since I was in my 20s and it runs in my family. I have been on Accutane 40mg twice, when I was 29, and if you can believe this, when I was almost 40. The side effects were punishing. But it did work for a while. Unfortunately my acne came back as a result of hormonal imbalance and here I am, in my 50s, still suffering from cystic acne that leaves small dark keloid scars along my jawline, chin, and the lower part of my cheeks.
I was given doxycycline and that worked for a short while, but my body quickly became resistant to it, and it stopped working. Then, I was given spirolactane, a high blood pressure diuretic medication that is supposed to block androgens, but I was terrified to take that because of the side effects. I was about ready to give up, and I did NOT want to go on another course of Accutane at my age.
I was surfing around online and found good reviews for Acnetame, and was really doubtful. If the prescription meds can't do it, why bother? But I decided to try it based on the reviews, and was and am GLAD I did.
It began to work immediately with ten days. I'm not sure if that was a placebo-like joy and excitement over trying something new, but it began working quickly. My deep cystic acne shrank, and what acne was forming quickly vanished. I even began to notice a lightening of the dark scars. My skin did become dry and a little flaky, but that's remedied with oil-free lotion. I also drink a ton of water. I am taking two a day, and at this rate, if my acne keeps improving, cut it down to one for maintenance. I'm just really surprised pleasantly at how fast this worked when everything else stopped working.
I can't say how pleased I am with this. Fifty plus years old and breaking out, and now, my skin is rapidly clearing.
