Overview
Grout. The very utterance of the word sends shivers down the spine of anyone that’s tried to tackle an entire tiled bath and shower. Nightmares of having to scrub each of the long lines of grout just to see a slight increase in the shade of brightness will leave many of us wishing we’d gone with a different shower decor option. There are many grout cleaning and covering products out there, each with their own benefits and drawbacks.
The Claim
Homax Grout Whitener claims that you can apply it and it not only gets your grout whiter, but helps prevent it from getting dirty again. This will appeal to anyone that wants to reduce the number of times they have to get up close and personal with their bathroom tub and shower.
The Hype
When a grout product comes along that shows some promise, it starts to get attention. When word of mouth starts spreading, there’s a sort of buzz that surrounds a product, and that is what is happening here.
The Cost
Homax Grout Whitener is less than $10, so it’s something that’s easy to pick up. Depending on the size of the job you might need to get an extra bottle of it, to just have a spare for when you need it down the road.
The Commitment
This is the part you have to be ready for. Although it is supposed to be easier than constantly scrubbing your grout, many people have noted that it does take time to apply
Evaluation
Homax Grout Whitener is winning people over with its results. Even though it’s been said that it takes some time to apply, this is true for most grout jobs because there’s usually so much area to cover. And since the grout lines are usually so fine, and there are so many of them, it just takes a while to get them all done. The same is true with most grout products that require you to apply some sort of putty or cream to the grout lines.
Why People Hate Grout, But Love Tile
A tiled bathroom just plain looks great. There’s really not a good way to have tile without the grout, so it’s just a necessary evil that comes with the look. Tile is great because it cleans up easily, repels water, and creates a sanitary environment. But the grout in between just has a way of attracting dirt, water, mold, and gets discolored so quickly. That’s why there’s a big market for products to help with the job. Homax Grout Whitener seems to be doing a good job, but you won’t really, truly know until you use it in your own home. Luckily it won’t set you back too much to give it a trial run.
There are really just two types of products out there when it comes to grout. Those that try to clean it up, and those that try to cover it. Homax Grout Whitener is going for the aesthetic cover up, but it also goes a step further and bonds with your grout so that future stains and dirt find it harder to stick to it. That’s why you want to take your time and try to do a precise job with it. The extra time spend on it now will mean less time spent later. If there are particularly bad areas, like where water pools up in the corners, make sure you get those spots really good. You’ll thank yourself later.
Our Recommendation
To win the grout game, you not only have to make your grout look better right now, but you have to take preventive measures so that it doesn’t quickly return right back to its old look. That’s what Homax does. It not only whitens your grout but provides a seal so that you don’t have to go through the entire process again next week. By extending the time between grout cleanings, it’s actually improving your quality of life. For less than a Hamilton, we recommend giving it a go.

I think this would be better used after cleaning the grout with a proper grout cleaner. Just covering the dirty stuff on the grout is a problem because if it's mildew underneath, then it actually grows out of the seal and it becomes an even bigger problem. With that said this should be advertised as a product that should be used after cleaning, because then it would work pretty well.
I have to agree. Maybe in a cold country that has no humidity. Grout and tile have the ability to trap moisture from humidity and any dirt that is left beneath the surface is going to harbor mold. This can also end up pushing the til out of place simply because the grout is cracked with an abundance of dirt, mold and mildew beneath the pretty cover up job. Grout needs to be steamed or deep cleaned to deal with the issue. Now, if you live in zero humidity, this product may give you years of continuous service. But, in conclusion--for the effort it takes to do this whole ritual--it would be better to just get down and clean it--wouldn't it?
