Does the Hug Light Night Vision Really Work?

Hug Light Night Vision is a light that you wear around your neck that is supposed to provide just the right amount of light, and not a blinding amount the way most white lights do. But how well does this night light neckpiece work?

Overview
When it comes to lighting things up when things are dark and you don’t want to turn on the main lights, you have several options, and the list seems to keep growing. It seems that the long standing tradition of using a night light just isn’t getting the job done anymore, and there are several companies that are releasing products designed to light our paths in unique ways. There are even lights in slippers that turn on when you put your feet in.

The Claim
The makers of the Hug Light Night Vision device are taking the concept of a hug, and applying it to a light. The gadget literally goes around your neck and holds onto you in order for it to work.

The Hype
There isn’t much in the way of hype here, they of course are trying to sell their product and are putting in the best light possible, showing all of the different ways you could use it, and all of the different situations you might find yourself in where it would come in handy. At the same time they might exaggerate a bit when it comes to how often you’ll really use this, and how much of a difference it will make in your life. They talk about “night blindness” as if it is a debilitating condition that we’ve all suffered from at one point, which is something that is an actual medical condition known as nyctalopia, which only some people have.

The Cost
Hug Light Night Vision is $17 if you order one, or $24 if you order two, and both of these prices are with shipping included. This isn’t a bad price for a light like this, and

it’s nice that they leave you with the option of choosing which one you want to go with. If you really want two of them, it’s as if you’re getting a $10 discount. The way it’s set up is that the base price of the unit is $10 and shipping is $7. They give you a second one free if you pay an additional shipping cost, which is how the $24 total is reached. Keep in mind though that if you return these you’ll only get the original purchase price of $10 back, and your shipping fees will not be returned.

The Commitment
Chances are that when you saw this on TV you thought they would be useful in your day to day life, and you were just checking to see if the offer was legit and if anyone had actually tried them yet. This means that you’ll likely be able to put these to good use, since you already have a situation in mind of how you’ll use them.

Evaluation
The Hug Light Night Vision has a few things going for it. First, it uses a softer light so you won’t have to be harshly awoken by a bright light if you have to get up in the middle of the night. This is a similar tactic to using a night light that is going to emit a softer glow rather than a big bright beaming light. Also, these are designed so that they’re adjustable, and can adjust to fit any sized person and be worn comfortably. By wearing it around your neck and being able to adjust either side of it, they’ve made it so it’s completely hands free.

Not having to fumble with a flashlight in your hand is a big plus for this gadget. It means you can read a book, or have your path lit, and not have to worry about constantly adjusting where you want the light to be.

getting our Thumbs Up rating, as it has a clever design that will provide a great benefit in a large number of situations. The feature of being able to switch between a red light and a white light is pretty great, since the red light will help when you just need a soft light, and the white light can be used when you need a more standard light.

Our Recommendation
This is getting our recommendation as a light that you can keep handy around the home for times when you want a nice, soft light. We’d suggest keeping one by the bed for trips to the bathroom or kitchen without having to turn lights on throughout the house or in the bathroom. It’s better than some of the ideas we’ve seen, like slippers with lights in them, because it will shine the light not just downward, but wherever you have it pointed.

The science behind the idea of a red light preserving night vision is sound and has been used since WWII at least. There are many types of lights and goggles one can purchase to maintain night vision. This is just a different model and should work will if not to many corners were cut quality wise.
