Overview
Clogged drains are a part of life for most homes, and it only makes sense that drains would clog because of all the twisting and turning they do. The most notorious clogs in most homes happen in the bathroom and kitchen, and it’s usually a high priority to get them unstuck so you can get back to life as normal. The lure to a drain cleaner is that you could potentially avoid calling out a plumber or resorting to trying to act like a plumber yourself.
The Claim
The major claims made on Drano is that it can work to get rid of the gunk that is causing your sink or tub to drain slowly, or not at all. They have several different products to get rid of clogs, and also have a line of septic tank products to make sure that your septic system stays clean and operating well. For each product they make separate claims, for example on their Max Gel they say it has a thick formulation so that it cuts through even tough clogs quickly. They say even if your sink or tub has water in it the gel is heavier so it pours right through it. They also say that it’s safe to use on your plumbing system, even if it is made out of different materials.
The Hype and Appeal
Over the years Drano has received its share of ad campaigns on the television, and along with Liquid Plumbr is one of the few branded drain clearers that you find as your options at the store. People love to save money, and if they can fix this problem on their own and at home it can mean dozens of dolars kept in their pocket.
The Cost
Compared to the cost of calling the plumber, Drano looks pretty good, with most of their products clocking in near the $10 mark or less. It’s also quite competitively priced with its direct competition, and is priced higher than generic and store brands, as you’d expect.
The Commitment
The other good thing about using a drain cleaner like this is that you’re not really involved in the process too much, you just pour it in and let it go to work. If it works, problem solved and you don’t have to worry about it again until it re-clogs. If it doesn’t work you haven’t spent too much to try it out and now you can escalate to the next step of calling a professional.
Evaluation
After so many years on the market, and so many improvements and upgrades made to their already successful product, Drano is still satisfying consumers and getting good feedback from those that try it. So yes, it does work as long as the right conditions are present for its success. With so many things that can cause a clog, you have to make sure that the clog in question is one that Drano is effective on. This would be clogs caused by hair, grime, and other gunk that the solution can break up.
There are other ways to potentially unclog your drain, especially if it’s a clump of hair that has accumulated. There are drain cleaning wands similar to the ones the pros use that are able to snake into your drain and pull out the hairball so that the water can run free again. The draw to using these types of snaking devices is that they are a greener alternative and don’t involve pouring powerful and caustic chemicals down the drain and into water supplies.
Overall, Drano appears to live up to its reputation and in the majority of instances it does make at least some improvement. It
may require repeated attempts if it’s a big clog, but it should do the trick at some point. If it’s unable to help you out of your jam, then you were likely destined to call the plumber anyway, so it’s not really the product’s fault, it’s just a clog that is too big for it, or you have something lodged in your pipes that it can’t dissolve.Our Recommendation
It’s nice to have a few options to go with, especially if you live in a house that seems to have an issue with drains getting repeatedly clogged. We’d recommend getting a DIY drain snake, having a bottle of liquid drain cleaner, and having a trusted plumber in case neither of those work. That way you can keep up with the problem as it goes along, and if it ever gets out of hand you’ll have a system in place for how to deal with it.

Drano max gel is life saving product for me its just amazing. I lived in two different apartment and my bathtub cloged. After a lots of research I bought drago. I was not expecting a miracle but hands down, this product uncloged my bathtub in 15minutes. Amazing
I read the article, but how is the YouTube video "Drano Challenge" relevant to the article? Why include the video when the article claims that it works and the video claims that it doesn't?
Over the years I've used Drano Max Gel maybe 4 or 6 times, always according to the directions. Today I have all the bath copper 1 1/2 inch pipes under my second floor rotted through and pouring through my kitchen ceiling. Will never use this product again!! The fix is going to be between $3000.00 and $5000.00 dollars. Should of used a $4.00 plunger.
I have what I think is incorrectly routed plumbing in that I have a perpetual clog down the line from a sink and tub. Its a good 10 feet, and I have tried numerous times with an old-timey snake with to no avail. The typical culprit is soap and hair as the backwash is typically sudsy. I have paid to have it snaked which is roughly 70 usd. Had the issue again today (its about an annual thing..) and used enough Drano to fill the piping to the clog (about 160oz) of their standard product. Waited about 30 minutes and voila. Clear pipes. $10..
Well, there is two side to every story, my wife sink clogs up on a regular basis, I use Draino Max and it works well. But in the kitchen, it has been another story. I have a heavy duty garbage disposal, and there a few thing you should not use it for, that is vegetables that are fibrous in nature. My wife dumps down cabbage and cilantro last night, without telling me. Today I was peeling sweet potatoes and grinding them up in the disposal. Then I noticed that the water wasn't running out of the sink, plunger did not work, I disconnect the P-trap but it wasn't clogged. I have gone through two and on half bottle of Draino Max and still no results.
My house was built in the late sixty's with cast iron pipes. I am very handy, so if this round doesn't do the trick it'll be me the plumber cutting the pipes and installing new PVC. YUCK!!!
Just wanted people to know both sides of my sink was clogged I plunged for about an hour using baking soda and hot water and vinegar with no avail my neighbor brought me over a snake but before I used it I went to the Dollar Store and bought a $5 bottle used it the first time half bottle still slow poured second half in that said half hour my sink is fine thank you great product just wanted people to know that it does work and I was very skeptical
I ordered Drain-FX online after hearing about it on the Gary Sullivan radio show and it cleared my drains - no need for chemicals. It's ecofriendly & effective. I highly recommend it.
I appreciate that you recommended to have other options like a drain snake on the side in case Drano doesn't work. In most of the places I lived, the clog in the sink was easily cleared with Drano, but the only problem is that it can easily clog back up again. Having Drano on the side, and a basic knowledge of how to clean a drain by is always the best way to approach a clogged drain. If all else fails, call a plumber!
drano gel work? heck no says gose through standing water NOT. still most in the sink and there was only 1/2 inch of water in sink . My opinion it sucks
Anytime I have a small clog in the sink I turn to Drano. It isn’t worth spending a few dollars less on cheaper drain products when Drano can fix the problem with one try. It’s great for bathroom sinks. You just pour it in, then let is set for a while, then like magic the clog is gone. I don’t know how great it would be for sinks or garbage disposals as I haven’t used it in there, but it works great for bathroom sinks. It cost a few dollars more than the competitors, but if the product works, then who cares.
