QuietRock sheets can be installed just like regular drywall products. However, when you tap on these sheets, you will notice that there is no resonance and reverberation. The company behind the QuietRock product is called Serious Materials, and it has a good reputation among home builders and construction workers.
The Claim
QuietRock claims to be the “lowest cost noise reduction wall panel on the market.” By just using a single sheet of it you are guaranteed a soundproof wall. And these wall panels are easy to install too, as they can be cut just like standard drywall panels with a utility knife. These walls offer sound absorption and dampening to soundproof a particular area or room.
The Hype
With its high STC ratings, QuietRock wall panels have become in demand for the construction of studios, theatres, and soundproof rooms. According to the maker of these materials, you can save money by installing just one layer of wall panel instead of several sheets to make a particular room soundproof and noise-free.
The Cost
There are different types and models of QuietRock wall panels. The standard type of sheet costs around $50 or so. On the other hand, a single sheet of ordinary drywall panel costs around $30. As you can see, QuietRock costs almost twice as much as ordinary wall panels. However, you may need to install 8 layers of these ordinary panels to make a particular room soundproof. If you’ve got two bedrooms that share a wall, it might be worth the cost to have peace and quiet and not hear every little sound that comes from the room.
The Commitment
QuietRock wall panels can either be installed directly or indirectly on studs. However, to make the soundproofing quality work, there should be some kind of framing installed behind the wall. Note that if you install QuietRock on any surface that doesn’t have framing or studs, the soundproofing quality will not work. The QuietRock product is really good. However, it can be quite expensive if you compare it with ordinary wall panels. If you get the model #525, it can take the place of 8 layers of standard drywall panels. Besides, there are a lot of disadvantages to installing multi-layered walls. Aside from the added expense (material and labor costs), you will also be putting too much weight on the walls. And you will also lose some of the available space in a particular room.
Yes, QuietRock wall panels work amazingly if you follow the proper steps during installation. It works effectively for soundproofing and it also works in saving you money. You see, these panels may seem to be expensive when compared to ordinary wall panels. However, if you need to install multiple layers of standard wall panels in order to make a room soundproof, you will need to spend on glue, sealers, and even labor. And that will add up to a lot of money and a lot of time as well.

Hi, my family and I are trying to get rid of the bar music sound. They are our neighbors. The law is not stopping them from the loud music. It gets hard trying to sleep. Will this sheet rock stop this noise?

My furnace is located in a hall closet next to the living room. If I put some quietrock on the adjoing wall will it help muffle some furnace noise?
I had this installed on a party wall in my home and it is amazing! I only wish I did the rest of the house with it but my budget was tight. I could hear everything my neighbor did in his home and now I can't hear him at all. I only used it in the living room and bedrooms. The other parts of our house we used two layers of gypsum with GreenGlue and their is no comparison between the walls. QuietRock wins hands down. For the people who say is doesn't work your installer either installed another product or installed it incorrectly. This is a no brainer for me. I live in a prewar apartment building. A new neighbor has moved in with 2 puppies that contusion drop or drag things across the floor and he keeps his tv at a volume of 65 that vibrates my ceilings. My contractor mentioned QR. anyone have experience with this type of issue and using QR.

The product does what is states is does. However, as many comments have pointed out, executing total sound isolation is difficult, especially in residential retrofit situations. Here are a few weak points: doors and windows!, HVAC ducts, and not sealing every last crack and crevasse. Sound is like water. It will go everywhere water would go if you can imagine an environment where water flows up and in any direction.

Hi Don, I was considering installing QuietRock on my ceiling but am now thinking that it might be a mistake to spend the extra money. What I'm after is sound proofing (or dampening as much as possible) the walking thuds and creaks on the hardwood floor above my ceiling. I'm reading that QuietRock is good for air sounds like talking or TV noise but not so good for the low frequency sounds of walking on hardwood floors or creaking. Can you opine on this some more. If I'm only interested in these types of low frequency contact sounds (not air sounds) wouldn't 5/8" of regular gypsum be just as good and much cheaper? BTW, My ceiling is a 2"x10" and I've already installed 6" of Roxul insulation. Just the Roxul seems to eliminate much of the air sounds like TV or talking. Thanks in advance.

I installed the quietrock 5/8 ez-snap product and it worked for me. Cut down the noise from my next door neighbor tremendously. If you use this product you have to use the sealants quiet seal pro, and quiet putty. In addtion, I used roxul safe 'n' sound insulation. Now when they're playing music next door I can't hear them.

I live in an apartment that the upstairs tenants make hard loud crackling and sharp popping noise from walking with hard heel shoes and dropping things. I just need one bedroom ceiling 144 sq feet (12'x12')treated.
I have read in the comments where quietrock won't block structural noise or vibrations. But I just want the noise dampened and reduced so I can sleep. I am a night owl. I sleep wearing a pair of Bose Q20 noise cancelling earbuds that block bass and thumps, but the sharp pops get through.
The apartments are actually very soundproof but these neighbors are noisey.
I have a 9 foot ceiling. Would a layer of Quietrock added over the existing ceiling reduce the noise.

What is barely mentioned here is that often the real issue is the low frequency sounds. The bass - rumble - thump ... however you experience it, is extremely difficult to mitigate because the "sound" (some below audible levels) travels through solids and the low frequency waves have much more energy than the higher frequencies. This is why you hear (and/or feel) the neighbor's bass from their sound system but not the higher notes. Often the audio source in your neighbor's house seems somewhat moderate to them, but the walls of your house act like a "drum" to make it worse. Trucks roaring by cause similar vibrations. These wall systems are not designed for that.
Extreme measures are necessary to reduce this transmission. Thick concrete walls may help. A super engineered "room in room" may help. I am NOT an expert, just a long time sufferer who has done a lot of research. Sell the house. That will be your least expensive solution. But beware - with the power of current sound systems, someone in your new neighborhood will be creating the same problem for you.
