Overview
When the Wii was introduced it took the gaming world by storm. Now all of the major consoles have a controller free, action-based system so it’s not the only system on the market that has the ability to get you up and moving.
The Claim
The Wii Fit claims that you can get a good workout by using its motion-based system to get you moving and following the actions you see on screen. They claim to be able to give you a yoga workout, and other fitness programs so that you don’t get bored.
They now have the Wii Fit Plus that claims to be even more effective at getting you in shape with extra programs on blanacing and more advanced tracking capabilities. They really do a good job of incorporating science and technology into a fitness product, more so than any other device at this time.
The Hype
The hype comes from how ridiculously fun they make it look in the commercials. Nothing that fun can be good for you!
But really, this system has gotten hype from day one, and most peopl that try it will say that it’s a lot of fun. The non-hype of people saying it doesn’t work is probably from those that can’t get any workout program to work.
The Cost
You’ll have to already have a Nintendo Wii in order to hook up the Wii Fit to it. It’s an accessory to the main console. It comes with its own board that you stand on and use throughout the exercise programs, so it’s a self-contained system. You don’t have to buy any extra discs or anything, it comes ready to unbox and put to use.
The Commitment
Like any workout program you have to use it for it to work. If you expect to see results from using the Wii Fit, you’ll have to get off the couch and get involved with it. It comes with a built in weighing system so you can weight in just like a prize fighter before each session.
This is actually a Japanese method of weight loss, tracking your weight daily is supposed to make you automatically lose weight without even thinking about it. Subconciously you’ll make better eating choices and get more action into your life so that you’ll weigh in at a lower weight than the previous day. The method is not for everyone, and if you try it and see your weight going up you might get discouraged.
Evaluation
The Wii Fit is super fun and easy to follow along. The fitness programs that are included are well thought out and will keep you moving as you try to keep up with the characters on the screen. If you need a gimmick to get you active this is the product for you.
The Wii Fit functions as advertised, but it’s up to you to determine if it works as a weight loss catalyst. All of the pieces are in place, all you have to do is choose your favorite programs and stick with them for the proper length of time until you see results.
Our Recommendation
Definitely pick up the Wii Fit if you get the chance. You won’t be disappointed because att least you’ll have a lot of fun trying to get fit, even if you never make it there. You can enlist a workout buddy and the two of you can have loads of fun with it, and bring some competitiveness to the system.
For the serious exercise junkie you might be surprised by how sensitive the Wii Fit is, and it can help you improve your balance and form on the things you love to do in real life. For the novice, you will be able to simulate activiites that are too intimidating to try in the real world.

I love the Wii Fit, and the newer version, the Wii Fit Plus. It's very encouraging that it includes a graph of your weight progression. There are also numerous exercises to choose from, and the aerobics and balance exercises are basically games. This is one of my favorite ways to get a little fun exercise and stay active. It's nothing too intense; I did many of the exercises on it up until I was 8 months pregnant. My favorites are the yoga poses, running game, and boxing game.
Wii Fit is amazing - i'm not entirely sure how great it is just on it's own as a weight loss tool, but as a gaming device combined with a fitness device you don't get much better.
The balance board is great, the games that come with it are great too. You can really work up a sweat on some of them (like the boxing). Or if that's not your thing you can just do some Yoga.
Highly recommended!
