Is DampRid Going To Rid Your Home of Dampness And Moisture?

2.3/5 - (11 votes)

For those of you who have never heard of DampRid, it’s a bucket filled with salt crystals which apparently absorb excess moisture out of the air. In doing this it reduces the growth of mildew and mold.

What is DampRid?

DampRid is a product that contains moisture-absorbing crystals to help minimize moisture in

  • Your home
  • RV
  • Car
  • Cottage
  • Boat

or any area where moisture is a problem.

A Good Product History

DampRid products have been on the market for more than 70 years. DampRid also controls odors caused by moisture like mildew and musty odors and stale odors.

This product is virtually a wireless dehumidifier, making this product extremely convenient. Many products like candles and sprays just cover up odours, they don’t eliminate them. However DampRid products absorb and eliminate odors. This results in cleaner, drier air.

How Do DampRid Moisture Absorbers Work?

When the DampRid products which contain all natural crystals are exposed to air, they absorb moisture and slowly dissolve into a liquid brine, which is a saltwater solution. However, there may be an opposite problem. Which is not having enough moisture in your home. This is a problem that needs to be rectified as well.

DampRib only traps excess moisture and never dries the air to the point of damaging furniture, animals, plants and clothing.

DampRid works in three phases.

  • The first phase DampRid crystals absorb excess moisture from the air, then harden and form a solid mass.

  • The second phase is when accumulated moisture begins to drip into the bottom of the tub and about half to three-quarters of the crystals dissolve.

  • The final phase is when all of the crystals have dissolved and the bottom of the chamber is full of liquid. However, if using products that contain scented or fragranced beads a small layer will remain in the top chamber, these can be discarded in the trash and the liquid can be emptied into the toilet.

The DampRid formula is environmentally friendly and septic safe.

Where Can I Use the DampRid Products?

As DampRid products don’t require electricity these great products can be used anywhere that moisture may be a problem such as:

  • I am still displaced from Hurricane Michael that devastated my home in Bay County Florida in October 2018, and I’m living in my travel trailer in my back yard. I noticed the closets and cabinets were retaining moisture and had a slight musty order. I purchased a one time use DampRid Moisture Absorber for each closet and cabinet area which are small compared to those in a house. For larger areas I would use multiple absorbers. I’m happy to say this product is working for my needs and meet my expectations. After reading previous reviews, I want to comment DampRid is not meant to mitigate flood damage or plumbing failures. DampRid will not remove all moisture and humidity from one’s environment. However, in my opinion it is not marketed to do so. It has been successful in removing excess moisture and preventing mildew and musty smells in the areas where I have them placed. I have only used this one style of DampRid so cannot evaluate any spills or damage from spills. Based on my personal experience, I recommend this product for similar tasks. • This seems like a good product and have been using it for years until i had a bad experience with it. Some how some of the fluid leaked out and ruined my leather coat. One part of it got bumpy. I tried to see if cleaning it would correct my coat. The cleaning company told me there is nothing I can do about it. The coat is destoryed. I bought this coat in Italy and im wanting to know from you wht can I do?

  • We have a small guest house with a tiny bathroom that, despite ventilation, has horrible humidity problems. It gets up to 98% humidity after a long, hot shower... Normally, it's around 75% humidity in the bathroom--around 30 square feet.

We bought the 4-lb "high capacity" buckets of DampRid and stuck them in the bathroom to help control the humidity. No dice. There was no change in our hygrometer reading between new DampRid and no DampRid over a two year period. We're very disappointed but won't waste our money on the product again.

  • I'd give this product 1--maybe 2--star(s). We bought THREE of their giant-sized tubs for a tiny 200 sf guest house that has only one window and is so well-insulated humidity is always a problem in it. We put the DR in the bathroom, under the kitchen sink, and in the guest house's tiny closet. After two months, (September, October, Illinois), the humidity has gone from a daily average of about 80% RH to a daily average of about ... 80% RH. We finally broke down and bought a large room electric dehumidifier.

I won't waste money on DR anymore.

  • This stuff works !!! But best to start before you have the mold or extreme damp problem. We travel to humid climates every winter, so knowing that installed these in every corner, closet , cupboard, then check them regularly and replace immediately as needed . Consequently , we have no problems

  • I use this in my RV (which is my actual home). I think damprid works very well. The people I bought my RV are the ones that told me about this product. I have a bag in the closet and a bucket in the restroom. When the AC fan quick I placed one in the living area. I like this product.

  • We had an oily substance on the floor of the closet and couldn't figure out where in the world it was coming from. Finally, one day I discovered it was from the Damprid packet that my husband had been placing in the closet for years. Unfortunately, he didn't place the packets in a bucket as directed and it leaked into the floor and became a stain on the ceiling below. What a huge mistake it was to use the packet without a basin of some sort to catch what was supposed to be "water". This oily substance is disgusting and now we need to repair our drywall ceiling :/ Very frustrating. Baking soda is what we will be using in the future!

  • We used open bags of charcoal in our closets when leaving for several months when I was young to keep down mold and mildew; that was before Damprid. My experience with Damprid was in a basement that had been very wet all the time before I bought the house; we had to put in outside pipes, the kind with holes in them, all around the outside of the basement, then inside the basement put several Damprid small buckets between the 2 x 4 posts on the walls. It worked great, we were able to carpet the basement and no more wet basement problems. I think after the Damprid when we wanted to enclose the walls we used kitty litter and left it in place, walled them in and put our toolroom down there.

  • It's a dehumidifier, not a humidifier. It's tough to take your review seriously if you don't distinguish a difference.
