Ordinary oven mitts leave much to be desired, and the Ove Glove aims to overcome all of their drawbacks. It fits like a glove and can withstand really high heats, but does it really work like their chintzy infomercials claim it does?
Overview
If you’ve ever burned your hand while using an oven mitt then you know that while they’re a good idea in theory, in practice they don’t work as well as they should.
If you have a low quality oven mitt, the hot pan you are taking out of the oven may burn your fingers right through it. If you get one that’s too bulky, you might drop the pan because you can’t get a good grip.
What the Ove Glove tries to do is provide a mitt that lets you get a good grip, while withstanding very hot temperatures. By addressing both the issue of bulkiness, as well as the issue of a mitt not really fitting the hand, and not really protecting from long-term or very high heat exposure, they’ve tried to make the best possible oven mitt available. But have they succeeded?
The Claim
The Ove Glove says that it’s made with the same type of material that they make firefighter gear with.
In addition to kitchen work, they also claim that you can use the Ove Glove in other situations, like when changing a hot light bulb, using the barbecue grill, or arranging logs in the fireplace.
The Hype
Getting worked up about silly products is what television marketing is all about. They have to make the Ove Glove seem exciting, so people will be enticed to buy. Even though the ads are cheesy, they are effective and they are good at showing what you can expect when you use it.
The Cost
The Ove Glove is very reasonably priced. You can get a 2 pack from Amazon for $30 with free shipping. So that’s about $15 per glove, and you might be wondering why you’d need two of them. You can just give the second one away, or designate it as the one you use on the grill.
The Commitment
The only level of commitment you need to use the Ove Glove is to replace whatever you currently use in the kitchen with it. It may take a little longer to put it on, because it’s a glove and not a mitten, so you have to get your fingers into it.
Evaluation
The Ove Glove looks and feels just like you’d think it does. Although it is a glove, it’s just the right amount of thickness, not to thick and not too thin. When you have it on it fits securely, and is stretchable for different hand sizes.
When you put it on it almost feels like it won’t work. Your brain is telling you that something this light won’t be able to protect you from heat the way it should. But when you test it out on a hot pan, you quickly see that you’re protected from the heat like never before.
The latest model has silicon grips on it that make it really great grabbing things. It’s a fantastic addition and makes something that already worked even better.
Does the Ove Glove Really Work?
Yes, the Ove Glove works as demonstrated, and allows you to be more nimble in the kitchen without a big bulky oven mitt slowing you down. You’ll have more control, and have fewer burns than before.
Our Recommendation
Grab an Ove Glove and you’ll never look back. One thing you’ll want to make sure of is not to get it wet. The material that is used is great for resisting heat, but not so great resisting water. When it gets wet it tends to stay wet for a long time.
So keep it in a nice dry place in your kitchen and you’ll be glad you bought it each time you use it. It may be kind of pricey for an oven mitt, but considering the job it does it’s worth it.
We have not even had ov gloves for a year and I am constantly getting burned today is the worst of all I got burned twice in one day
They work as long as you don’t wash them !!! As soon as you wash them they are just no good . I have one I have not washed. But you know its gonna get nasty ! I’m disappointed ! Wasted my money !
I completely disagree with you. I purchased ove gloves and they didn’t work at all. I bought them from Walmart and it didn’t take long at all for them to wear out. And I hadn’t even had a chance to wash them yet. I really felt like I was going to get burned. I’d be better off using winter gloves then this. Plus you can get winter gloves at the dollar store way cheaper than these gloves.
I ordered a 2-pack from Amazon and I can’t even get my fingers in them. They are so tight I cannot use them!! I don’t know if these are fakes but they are completely USELESS!
A little late to the party, but count me among those that would recommend the “Ove Glove” more than any other ASOTV product I’ve purchased. We have 4 of them in rotation at any one time. One thing to keep in mind is that they are NOT liquid proof, and liquid transfers heat VERY quickly. If you spill grease on your glove, you’re going to have a bad time. Be very careful using it around liquid. (An internal waterproof barrier would’ve done wonders for this.) However, they are also machine washable, so can be tossed in the washer and dryer to come out working as good as new.
We use ours in the kitchen until they get dirty enough to be relegated to BBQ Grill duty. Very much recommend them.
Not sure why but these gloves seem to lose their effectiveness the more they are washed. Maybe the weave loosens up, but whatever happens they don’t work as well as when they are new. They also absorb grease and oil that you can’t wash out. Eventually they start to stink so bad your hands will smell even from a short term use. This is my second pair and I’m looking for something better that I can also use with hot liquids (never use these with hot liquids as they act like a sponge and will burn your hands).
I was actually considering buying some Ove Gloves recently. Then, a friend gave me a pair of Boss Flexi-Grip painters gloves. The ones I have are thick and insulated like the gloves used by those who disassemble and clean commercial meat-slicing machines. These gloves have textured, rubberized blue palms and fingers which allow you to grab hot dishes and pans without burning your hands and fingers. These Flexi-Grip gloves are every bit as effective as the Ove Glove, but also like the Ove Glove, you don’t want to get them wet. You can likely find insulated painters gloves at your local Home Depot, Ace Hardware, or any hardware store. I harbor no ill feelings towards the Ove Glove, but I’m sure there are other, cheaper alternatives.
I have used this in the oven and I spent the whole time cringing and waiting to be brutally burned. Fortunately, it carries whatever necessary material that I found no need to be wheeled to the hospital because of scarring burns. This product works great and is a nice change of pace compared to the old fashioned oven mitt. Here is the only problem I have with this thing: Seriously? You want me to pay thirty dollars for only two gloves. Meh. There are similar products on the market that will not require any shipping charges and are significantly cheaper.
The Ove Glove is one of the best products I have ever purchased. I was a bit afraid at first, but I put the Ove Glove on and it makes it easy to take items from the oven and do all your cooking and baking. Another thing I use the glove for is the grill outside. You can use the glove to adjust and clean a hot grill and not have to worry about being burned. This would be excellent for restaurants. Another advantage is they aren’t bulky and don’t take up space and the cost is great. I paid $15.00 at Amazon.
I am definitely going to purchase this product because I agree with you, the mitten style oven gloves are really annoying and get in the way when trying to handle really hot pans and bakeware. I hope that these gloves will give me the control that I need to effortlessly take my favorite meals out of the oven. I am glad I found this review and these comments. But I have a couple of questions: Are they durable though? How long do they last? My old mitts would last a long time, though they would eventually break down from the heat of every use, of course.
Oooh…I haven’t heard of this item, but I would definitely try it. I just might have to pay a visit to my local Bed, Bath & Beyond to see if they carry it, or order on Amazon. $15 seems a little steep for one glove, but if it works, I’d prefer this to regular potholders any day. Would make a great bridal shower or wedding gift, too. I have a couple of showers coming up and will keep this product in mind.
Ove Glove is brilliant!
I bought a pack (only use one but always good to have a spare).
My main reason to try these was because i was fed up of the traditional mitt style glove.
I also bought some new pans, on which the handles can get pretty hot.
the Ove Glove makes is so easy to pick up hot items because you have full control over your hands and it’s like you’re not wearing a glove at all.
