Does Beano Really Work to Prevent Bad Gas?

Does Beano really work?Dietary supplements are big news at the minute and Beano is one of the brands that’s on the rise and that people are beginning to use. We will investigate this product in detail and work out if it is any good or whether the hype is over-rated. There are of course many other forms of dietary supplement in the market so there is a wide range of choice.

Beano is purchased in the form of tablets in a bottle and claims to offer various benefits to the consumer with regards to aiding the digestive system. It is designed to be sold to those people that have regular internal problems such as excess gas or bloating when eating food. The product first hit the shelves in 1990 but has been revised several times and evolved with modern medicine to better treat the user.

The Claim
Beano claims that their product can “prevent gas before it starts” which is a huge plus to those people that are unfortunately prone to getting that horrible bloated feeling when they eat gassy food such as broccoli, cabbage and peas etc. Beano also claim that their product is unique as it contains natural enzymes which are used to break down and digest the complex molecules that carbohydrates are made of.

The Hype
Many fruits and vegetables are full of gas and can leave the consumer with an irritating gassy stomach after eating. This is a big downside to eating healthy and can cause some people to turn away from such good nutrition in favour of fried or processed foods that leave the stomach less bloated but much worse for overall health. The beauty of Beano is that is promotes healthy eating and will encourage those with delicate digestive systems to continue or return to a healthy diet.

The hype comes from the statement that there will be no gas. This is quite misleading as you’ll likely still experience some gas, just not at the level that you would have had you not taken the product.

The Cost
The recommended retail price for a bottle of 50 capsules is $29.99. The prescribed consumption is 2 tablets before a gassy meal and assuming that you have 1 big meal a day, a bottle should last 25 days. Therefore it will cost just over $30 a month for full usage. This is a rather hefty price tag to be gas free.

The Commitment
This product requires little commitment as it simply needs the user to take a pill prior to consuming any foods that are likely to cause problems internally. Grains, vegetables and bean food products are the most likely contributors to internal gas and bloated bellies and so the user will simply need to identify when this type of food is being consumed and take a supplement. It can be tricky to start a regimen of taking pills daily, but once established can become a habit requiring little thought.

Beano is available in a tablet form that is intended to be swallowed as well as a melt away version which does as it says and melts in the mouth and is then digested by the stomach. This product is a particular plus to those people that struggle to swallow pills.

The product will not make you lose any weight but will allow you to resume a balanced healthy diet by preventing the build-up of nasty gasses. Doctors have often recommended Beano as a non-prescriptive means for curing this symptom. Beano can also be used by people that are as young as 12 and in some case can also be given to children that are even younger after seeking medical advice.

Does Beano Really Work?

Beano has generally received highly positive reviews from those people that have bought the product and added it into their diet. Many people say that they have tried several alternatives but none have been effective in preventing the build-up of gas and leaving people bloated all day long through simply trying to eat the right kinds of food.

Our Recommendation
Beano is highly reccomended as a problem for sorting out digestive bloatedness. It is worth buying even if the initial purchase is for a small batch and tried for a month before commiting to it as a long-term solution for a gassy belly. It is definitely worth a shot as so many positive reviews and with doctors highly recommending Beano, it must be a great product.

I bought Beano for my husband at Walmart for around five or six dollars. I watch the commercials and thought I have to have this for my husband because he has a lot of gas and it isn’t pleasant for us around him. Beano didn’t work for my husband. He took it faithfully, but the gas was still there. We have opted to not eating beans, chili and many other foods because of the gas. It may work for others and I wished it would have worked for him, but it didn’t. It doesn’t cost much to try it if you or someone close to you has a gas problem.

I’m sorry to hear about your husband’s gas problem, Rhonda. I empathize. I read your review on Gas-X as well. I appreciate your candor regarding the efficacy of these products. My gas is causing tension in more places than my digestive tract, so I would like to seek out the most effective solution to this problem as quickly as possible.

I recently (6 weeks ago) switched to a high fiber, very healthy diet. (Eat to Live, which pushes 2 pounds of vegetable, and a cup of beans, daily)

Although my health has VASTLY improved, I have gas as the one nagging side effect. Tried Beano for the first time today. I did make my gas less smelly, so that’s a big improvement. I can deal with the gas, I just can’t have smelly bombs…..

I want to keep up with this incredibly healthy diet, but I need to figure out a way to do it elegantly.

Also, in response to Rhonda, I’m guessing her husband has a food allergy/intolerance to something he eats daily, like dairy, gluten, etc.

Preparing the beans in a specific way helps a lot. You have to soak the beans, toss the soak water, then pressure cook them. If you can sprout the beans after the soaking process, that’s even more effective, but I’ve only been able to do that reliably with lentils. It works. I hope this helps.

I read a suggestion online to lower the gas production following navy bean soup, chili, lentils, split pea soup, etc. My husband (gluten, soy & garlic intolerant – could compete with Texaco for gas production!) This definitely worked, but it was a lot of extra time: rinse beans/peas, cover with boiling water & sprinkle liberally with baking soda. Rinse & repeat 3-4 a day x 72 hours. (You REALLY have to want that navy bean soup!) the beans turn a little dark, but neither of us experience any extra flatulence. At all.

keep eating healthy food and your body will adapt and thrive

sheila February 17, 2015 at 1:57 pm

Yes. It has been working very well for me. Before eating salad and fruits I take the recommended dose. If I am having chilli with beans or other foods that used to cause excessive gas I double the dose. My stomach is flatter as an added benefit. I highly recommend trying it.

Beano works to prevent me from farting after eating whole grain bread or cereal. It does however cause me stomach pain if take with empty tomach, so i take it after having a bite if my food first.

Bobbii March 18, 2018 at 11:29 pm

Have you tried the BEANO melt away tabs instead of the solid tablets? I had the same issue with the tablets causing my stomach to be uncomfortable after taking them. I changed to the dissolving ones and it worked. No stomach pain AND “no” gas. 🏃💨

I to stated a clean diet that causes gas !I am worried…. I’m dropping weight but I can’t go out on public. Only3 day s in. What to do

Question for folks:

My 7 year old daughter needs a high fiber diet for constipation and, due to medications, must protein pack or her growth will suffer. Recently, however, she has been fighting these foods (even ones she likes!) because of gas. I completely respect a 7 yr old girl is too embarrassed from farting, say on a school bus. I plan on asking her pediatrician, of course, but, I like to go in knowing what questions to ask and hearing other opinions.

Might Beano help her?

Jco February 5, 2016 at 12:25 am

After years of pain – no my body did not magically adjust, I finally identified the foods that were the biggest culprits for me – onions and garlic, but I love cooking with them both! I do cut them when they aren’t necessary, but if I’m going to go for it anyway then I take Beano and yes it absolutely works for me. I’ve tried gas-x after the fact – nothing. Zantac helps but has consequences the next day. Beano always does the trick. I don’t use it every day. I only use it when I’m willingly digging into something garlic/onion filled or when I go out to dinner where you don’t always know what’s going into it.

Michael February 16, 2016 at 1:23 pm

Beano works great for me! I have little to no gas when taken and it works on the very first day I used it. I highly recommend trying it so you can enjoy your veggies and fruits, whole grain bread or cereal. With confides and the best part is knowing it’s not going to screw up you intense like some others can.

Melanie July 4, 2016 at 7:16 pm

Have been having problems almost every time I eat with gurgling, belching and gas and reflux at night. Started taking beeno a few weeks back and no problems. No longer having to sleep on an uncomfortable wedge pillow. No more discomfort after meals. I’m ganna buy stock!

Audra Dore August 15, 2016 at 8:29 am

I have used it many times when it’s worked perfectly and a few times when it’s let me down (I use it when I’m about to eat baked beans, which I LOVE but which, of course, cause a lot of gas, usually the next day) I’ve found 3 things help make sure Beano is going to work for me;

1. Taking the max recommended dose (it says 1-3 so I take 3)

2. Taking it literally within seconds of the first bit of food

3. Eating all the food in a reasonable amount of time after I take it.

That’s just what I think works best based on my own experiences! Hope it helps 🙂

I was hoping to see some real science about Beano instead of anecdotal evidence (my mother uses XYZ and it solves her problems therefore it works) which is of course useless.

I have tried Beano myself. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t. Without Beano, sometimes I get gas, sometimes I don’t. So how do you evaluate that? Large double-blind studies. Not personal evidence. Sure, it doesn’t hurt to give it a try, and if you believe it works for you, of course keep buying it. But I don’t buy into this magical “natural enzymes” stuff personally.

Dave October 23, 2017 at 10:05 pm

The science has been done, and here it is. But note that these enzymes work only to a degree. They are not a complete solution, but they do help somewhat:

Maria September 3, 2016 at 6:45 am

It worked for me I’m happy with it

Harriet Auerbach October 25, 2016 at 11:30 pm

Beanie works great, however I sometimes have to use Phazyme.250mg to make me feel better.

Han S January 29, 2018 at 5:37 pm

Better out than in, I always say.

Jackie February 13, 2018 at 12:11 pm

Hello! I’ve been suffering from terrible gas and pains for almost over a year now. I’ve been taking Beano with my meals for three days now and I am fortunate enough to see a difference! The meals that once caused me pain and agony are once again enjoyable. Hoping it’ll continue to work. I have to be on a very special!

Maywd July 4, 2018 at 11:00 pm

I have horrible gas issues and this absolutely works for me. You have to literally have the offending food on your fork ready to go in your mouth before you swallow it. Two pills.

PH September 13, 2018 at 6:41 pm

I take 6 Beano a day, 2 tablets before each meal. Is this too much? What are the long term side effects?

Shavonne Lynch September 20, 2018 at 8:57 pm

Beano works for me!! Everyday afternoon at work I have so much gas, its so embarrassing, there is no smell, but the gas noises get loud because I cant always hold them in, I have passed gas walking past my co-workers desk, right next to one of my co-workers when they were asking a question and even in my bosses office…gas for hours 12-5 pm everyday, it was so bad, and then the last straw was that I laughed and a loud one came out in front of my new man!! Oh No, that was it, I remembered about beano from TV, I went and bought it that night, I used it the next day and not one I am So happy!! it worked perfectly.

rocco December 1, 2018 at 4:56 am

I too changed my diet to really focus on getting healthy. Loads of vegetables and loads of farts. This product did nothing for me and I am farting really bad right now. I don’t know what to do as even I can’t stand the smell of myself.

Mary Kay February 28, 2019 at 8:36 pm

I read somewhere that Beano is not recommended for anyone who has had their gall bladder removed. Is this true?

Poppy Shell March 3, 2019 at 5:38 pm

I have had decades of heartburn with terrible burping. Found out I had a hiatal hernia, caused by carrying four ten pound babies over the years. I had surgery to fix that and the heartburn was much better and I had far less burping. However ten years later the positive effects of the surgery wear off and I’m back to having heartburn. And tasting vomit if I eat late at night or have a big meal. Most medicine doesn’t help and I finally tried Beano. It’s like a miracle. I can’t believe how much better I feel! Why didn’t I try this years ago? I must really need the enzyme Beano provides. No side effects either.

Jack Slattery March 25, 2019 at 12:55 am

This could be a bonanza for Beano. Make an animal sized Beano for all the cows in the country to prevent their flatulence and we can continue to eat red meat with a clear conscience.

Ann James May 27, 2019 at 12:51 am

I’ve been on many medications, I have Gerd, and recently on a high fiber diet for constipation and on high levels of Prednisone, 60mg daily, taper. The gut pain, bloating and gas was chronic and non stop. I tried Gas-X for about a week without good results. I recently tried Beano and felt better almost immediately. I still have a few problems, but I don’t feel like doubling over anymore. I have no idea why Beano worked better.

Linda Wilson July 13, 2019 at 5:07 am

I am allergic to aspirin and have to be very careful with any medication I take. Is Beano safe to take with an aspirin allergy?

Toots Frumabut August 30, 2019 at 5:42 pm

I love my gas so much I give myself a Dutch Oven. No thank you Beano.
